The basic idea behind this light design is that there is a dial which is fixed to a rotating front plate that turns as the dial is rotated.

Behind the rotating plate is a fixed plate - both of these plates have circles removed in exactly the same position so that as the dial is rotated, ellipses of various sizes are 'created' resulting in different light intensities.
